My late uncle’s wife Lisa is wanting to make a studio in part of the basement. I removed the 1x6 boards that were stained and used for the walls & built entertainment center , it was ugly. I later removed the drywall ceiling. She wanted the 1x3 strips taken out and plans on having the ceiling painted black and the concrete walls painted white, with either killz or something oil based..?

I am a demo guy, but not too good with paint. Suggestions on painting this? She wants me to give her a bid, but I have no clue. I can borrow an airless sprayer from work and 1/2 ass it and spray the shit out of it all, or she can pay a contractor and have it done.

She lives on the other side of town, 45 minutes away, so I’m not really doing myself any favors by working for her.

That should be pretty easy, provided that the walls are dry. Ju st clean the walls, scrape off and patch any loose concrete on the surface, then paint with Kilz using a thick nap roller.

If she can hire a painter, just do that.

“an airless sprayer from work and 1/2 ass it and spray the shit out of it all"

At least for the ceiling, this is almo st certainly how any contractor will paint it. I'd have her get a few bids from painters, and then go from there.

Careful with white oil-based. I’m far from an expert but I did the floors of one room with white oil paint  and apparently it needs full sunlight or it takes on a (non-permanent) highlighter greenish tinge. Every time I move furniture it leaves shadows behind for a few weeks.

(I also used normal white concrete paint from Home Depot on my laundry room floor and that’s been great).

This brings up a good question, XJDano, is there a reason for oil based instead of water based ? I’ve painted several rooms quite happily with water based, so I don’t know if there’s a reason? (like is that the only kind the sprayer can use?)

My two cents, definitely spray that ceiling of you're going to paint it at all..

That looks like it could easily turn into a week-long job. I do like the black ceiling idea; and yeah contrasting white walls would enhance the effect even more . T hose painted basements end up looking pretty nice , and I especial ly like that it retains access to all the utilities r out ed around up there. Fini shed basements are overrated!

For some reason some contractor friend she asked suggested oil based for the walls, maybe he meant for the air ducts.

I don’t really know why she said it. I don’t think I would use anything oil based in my house, that crap stinks for a long while. Also I’m not putting oil base through a work sprayer, that’d be too much to clean up.

I may tell her that my time has to include drive time, and I’ll actually be 1/2 ass ing it. She may want a professional job , or I’ll pass it onto my coworker. Who will also 1/2 ass it.

Unless it is something fancy or a high moisture basement latex is fine and easier to apply/clean up. Even for high moisture Benjamin Moore makes a very nice paint. I think it is mostly for bathroom ceilings and is crazy expensive. Or you could use Farrow and Ball ($110 a gallon) - jk, I only learned that it was a real paint from SNL.

The oil base on the walls is to seal up the concrete and block stains. The stains will bleed thru water base. No matter how many coats. You can roll on oil primer than spray water based to cover the primer.

We spray lots of basement ceilings black.

Spray the ceiling black with low VOC oil-base paint. You will need reducer/thinner to spray it. You use oil vs. la tex/water base because it won’t show rust spots on anything metal like that duct work. The walls don’t need masonry paint because it looks like it’s been painted before. The walls can be sprayed with either latex or oil base paint. With a sprayer, you should be able to paint everything in under 4 hours. Paint sprayers are very forgiving; a half- assed job will look great. Good luck.

I would guess   the oil based suggestion is due to the permeability/moisture in the concrete . Either way, I’d recommend using a concrete primer for concrete.

Oil based isn’t necessary unless she wants the extra durability.

You’ll also want to clean the surface pretty good. Just read the directions on whatever products you choose and you’ll be fine. Don’t skimp out on the surface prep.

If you end up doing oil based get a good respirator, the kind with pods on the side. And use an appropriate spray nozzle for it . F or either paint type get disposable gloves and a paint suit is around 10 bucks. Tarp the floor at least under the sprayer and paint buckets and be warned that the spray nozzle can drip paint anywhere. Keep some buckets of warm water and a sponge handy just in case. You’ll need them to clean the sprayer anyway. Loads of Mineral  spirits if your going oil based.

Mask off the floor, then s pray primer on walls and ceiling. When dry, do the finish coats on the walls(don’t worry about overspraying ceiling ) , then when it’s dry, drape plastic around the whole room us ing masking tape to get crisp lines and corners and spray the ceiling. You could be done in 2 to 4 days depending on how much prep is needed.

You could give a separate bid for oil based and make the extra hassle and expense of it worth it.

If you’re going to spray the ceiling, getting rid of the 1x3 will make your job a lot easier. I can’t imagine having to manipulate a sprayer around all that stuff to get coverage.

If she wants to keep those for aesthetic - remove them and paint them separately then re-install.

I don’t like painting basement walls. Stuff from the outside tends to bleed through and cause staining. i was once told to leave block walls alone so they can “ breathe”.  It looks like she’s already got a coupe layers of paint down. I would follow other’s recommendations and avoid oil based products, if possible.

We painted my friends basement and did latex on the walls, though they were painted previously. We painted the c eiling with a sprayer and dryfall paint. Dryfall is way way easier to clean up in that type of situation. It does take alot though, so the 5 gallons are a must.
